Churches, synagogues, temples, and mosques should not be used as partisan political campaign offices or a means of funneling money to political candidates. That is why federal law prohibits houses of worship, like all tax-exempt organizations, from endorsing or opposing candidates and political parties. Current law protects the integrity of houses of worship, our elections, and the tax code.

In 1996, Americans United launched Project Fair Play. Through this project we educate religious leaders and other Americans about the rules that apply to political activity by tax-exempt organizations. When we see egregious violations of the law, we report them to the IRS. In addition, we fight all attempts to repeal or weaken current law (often referred to as the Johnson Amendment) that prohibits houses of worship, and all tax-exempt organizations, from endorsing and opposing candidates and political parties.

Ten election cycles later, we're still at it.
